Old Tappan is best experienced as a quiet Northern Valley day-trip community: municipal parks, a nine-hole public golf course, historic family cemeteries, neighborhood dining and easy access to the Revolutionary War landmarks of Tappan, New York.

The borough does not have a conventional hotel district. Overnight visitors generally use nearby Pearl River, Orangeburg or Montvale.
